The Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum is an essential custodian of the region’s archaeological and historical heritage and a dynamic cultural centre. Established in 1893, it began in the lower grammar school and was initially named Ferk’s Municipal Museum in honour of Professor Franc Ferk, who donated valuable artefacts in 1895. Due to space limitations, the museum moved to the former Dominican monastery in 1928. After World War II, it expanded further by taking over the Ptuj Castle complex and extended its focus to the wider Ptuj and Ormož regions.
Renamed the Regional Museum Ptuj in 1963, the museum now covers a broad area renowned for its rich prehistoric and ancient sites. It offers a range of activities including specialised restoration workshops, exhibitions showcasing its extensive collections, and educational programmes. The museum also hosts lectures and cultural events, fostering community engagement and ensuring that the history and traditions of Ptuj and Ormož are actively preserved and shared with both local residents and visitors.
