Art Museum Award

Art Museum Award

The Art Museum Award is a truly European award that places the social role of art museum in the centre. The award honours and highlights museum projects placing art in innovative, pioneering and creative contexts, to address and respond to current social issues. Since these issues are a major challenge to our society, the award motivates museums to function as ‘social arenas’, or socially relevant meeting places.

Values and inspiration

The award is built upon democratic and human values, including social justice, participation, inclusion, gender equality, racial justice, community building, sustainability, and resilience. These values should be the driving force behind new museological ideas for the 21st century. The award sets out to identify new role models, and models of excellence that can function as inspiring paragons of the social role of art museums. Art museums and art galleries are eligible.

What does it do for you?

The Art Museum Award is generously supported by the A.G. Leventis Foundation.

What can you win?

The award is handed over during our annual Award Ceremony and the winner will be given extra attention through the media and within the networks of the European Museum Academy and its partners. The winner will receive a trophy specially designed for the occasion.

Will there be an award ceremony?

There will be an award ceremony. The ceremony is part of the annual European Museum Academy Award Ceremony, which takes place in the second half of September in a different European city every year.

Is there a fee?

Yes, there is. The entry fee is 300 Euros per application, which is necessary to administer the award application as well as to visit the candidates and review their work.

Who can apply?

All art museums and art galleries are eligible to apply.

The applications must be submitted in English.

How will my application be judged?

A jury will judge the application. The jury consists of international experts from various disciplines. These experts are particularly aware of the social role of art museums. From the list of applications, the judges will select a shortlist of institutions. Members of the jury will personally visit these institutions.

In the event of a new COVID-19 wave, our judges will be reviewing the projects online.

How do I apply?

Visit our application page to create your account, and you will be guided through the process.

During the registration process you will be asked to fill an application form where you will also be invited to provide us with additional information.  After you have created an account and submitted your application, you can revisit your account page and upload supporting files, images and URL’s.

The closing date for applications is April, 1st 2023.

The European Museum Academy does not accept any responsibility for applications that do not comply to the rules and regulations or do not arrive at the Art Museum Award office after the deadline as stated above.
