A European Museum Expertise Foundation

A dynamic and forward-looking organisation to stimulate innovative thinking in European museums

Dear Friends of EMA,

We are happy to present our Autumn 2024 Newsletter.

The early summer was very busy for our jurors, who carefully assessed applications for the 2024 EMA awards. We are pleased to announce the winners of the Luigi Micheletti Award, DASA Award, Art Museum Award, and Children in Museums Award, who were honoured at a captivating ceremony in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Meanwhile, the Heritage in Motion Award recognised their winners during a ceremony in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, as part of the annual conference of the Forum of Slavic Cultures, during which the prestigious Ziva Award was also presented.

To stay informed about upcoming award cycles and application deadlines, please follow us on our website and social media channels.

In other news, we are excited to share that a new book, edited by EMA Chair Karl B. Murr, “The Future of Museums: Between Physical Place and Virtual Space,” has been published. This valuable resource is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Wim van der Weiden.

Readers will find valuable insights into the DASA Award in our interview with Gregor Isenbort.

Finally, the Meta-Museum project has been launched in Turin. EMA, along with 13 partners across Europe, are working together to understand the transformative power of cultural heritage through a neuroscientific lens. The project aims to support not only the growth of all citizens but also their resilience, empathy, and confidence in the future at this decidedly complex time for Europe and the world.

Enjoy the reading and warm regards,

Karl B. Murr

THE MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE
Between Physical Place and Virtual Space
“Peter Sloterdijk sees our digitalized world in a “growing spatial crisis”, accompanied by the danger of a “general virtuality of all relationships”. Others view the digitalization of the world as opening up a grassroots democratic space that allows everyone access to culture. Against this backdrop, this anthology examines the spatial characteristics of the museum between physical place and virtual space. The chapters collected here approach the museum space from various disciplinary perspectives, such as philosophy, history, art history, architecture, scenography, museum education and curatorial studies. At the same time, the contributions by international museum experts are assigned to different literary genres fundamental considerations alternate with think pieces, case studies and interviews.”

The book is dedicated to the memory of Wim van der Weiden.

PROJECTS

The META-MUSEUM project wants to scientifically measure emotional reactions to a cultural experience. It uses a neuroscientific approach. The project aims to develop new skills to design new cultural experiences, based on what is learned by this new methodology.

The project is coordinated by Politecnico di Torino, a Turin university. The project is planned to run for 36 months.

The European Museum Academy will primarily be engaged in developing an educational module and general communication and dissemination.
