The Museum of Emigration from Slovakia to North America, known as Kasigarda, is dedicated to preserving and reflecting on the significant migration of Slovaks to the United States and Canada from the late 19th century until 1968. Emigration has been a pivotal aspect of Slovak history, with approximately 1.3 million Slovaks undertaking challenging journeys to seek better opportunities and freedom in North America.
The museum’s name, Kasigarda, is derived from the Slovak version of “Castle Garden,” the historic immigration centre in New York City where many Slovaks first arrived. This name symbolises the hardships and hopes of those who emigrated, facing language barriers, cultural adjustments, and personal sacrifices in their quest for a new life.
Kasigarda aims to offer insights and showcase artefacts that illustrate the experiences of these Slovak immigrants. It seeks to fill a gap in Slovak historiography by highlighting the stories and contributions of Slovak Americans, whose struggles and successes have often been overlooked.
The museum’s establishment was made possible through the generous support of numerous sponsors, donors, and organizations from Slovakia and abroad, including notable individuals and community groups dedicated to preserving Slovak heritage.
The museum is a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Slovak emigrants and their significant role in shaping North American society, ensuring that their stories and experiences are remembered and respected.
