Heritage Museum Benkovac

The Benkovac Native Museum, housed in Kaštel Benković, features over 15,000 artefacts and is undergoing renovations to expand its exhibitions and facilities.

Established in 1983 within the National University of Benkovac, the Benkovac Native Museum has a rich history of preserving and showcasing the cultural and historical heritage of the Benkovac area. The museum’s collections span archaeology, ethnology, and cultural history, featuring over 15,000 artefacts, including items from Paleolithic to modern times. Although its operations were interrupted during the Homeland War, the museum has since rebuilt and expanded, with many artefacts returning from other institutions.

Housed in the historic Kaštel Benković, the museum is undergoing a major renovation to enhance its facilities and exhibitions. Planned updates include new collections on natural history, the Homeland War, and stone carving, alongside a modern museological approach to present the region’s history from prehistory to the present. The museum actively collaborates with local organizations and offers various cultural events, guided tours, and educational workshops, making it a central hub for understanding and celebrating the heritage of the Benkovac region.
