Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art

Ars Aevi is a symbol of global artistic solidarity and resilience, housing Southeast Europe’s leading contemporary art collection in Sarajevo.

Ars Aevi, a contemporary art museum in Sarajevo, is one of the candidates for the Živa Award. The museum’s name, an anagram of “Sarajevo,” translates to “Art of the Epoch,” reflecting its commitment to modern artistic expression. The museum is a visionary cultural project, established during the tumultuous period of the Bosnian War in 1992. Born out of the collective will of international artists, curators, and institutions, Ars Aevi has become a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The museum houses one of Southeast Europe’s most important collections of contemporary art, featuring works by some of the world’s most prestigious artists, all donated their pieces as a testament to the power of art in uniting people across borders.

The project is a cultural milestone for Sarajevo and a symbol of global artistic solidarity. Renowned architect Renzo Piano, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, contributed to this vision by designing the museum and constructing the iconic Ars Aevi pedestrian bridge, which physically and symbolically connects the city. Ars Aevi continues to evolve as a dynamic cultural centre, offering a rich program of exhibitions, educational initiatives, and digital projects that enhance accessibility and engagement. As a living testament to the enduring power of art, Ars Aevi stands as a regional hub for contemporary artistic expression, promoting dialogue and understanding across cultures.
