Dear Friends, We are excited to share with you the wonderful news from the Heritage in Motion 2024 Award Ceremony, which took place on September 26, 2024 at the Regional Ethnographic Open-Air Museum ETAR in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. The ceremony was part of the Annual Conference of the Forum of Slavic Cultures and the Živa Award, and was live-streamed on YouTube. The event was hosted by Massimo Negri, Scientific Director of the European Museum Academy, and Andreja Rihter, Director of the Forum of Slavic Cultures. Here are the winners of the evening:
🏆 Winner of New Digital Experience Category & Heritage in Motion 2024
Deutschlandmuseum Berlin – Germany 🇩🇪
Why they won: For its innovative approach in blending the educational aspects of a museum with an engaging and dynamic visitor experience, offering a captivating journey through 2000 years of German history.
Project description: Developed by Creative Studio Berlin & BänferKartenbeck, this ambitious project involved creating all animations, films, and soundscapes for the Deutschlandmuseum exhibition. Over 25 explanatory films, interactive maps, and large-scale projections were designed to immerse visitors in German history. Directed by Dorit Jeßner, this project transformed a complex exhibition concept into a dynamic, educational, and interactive museum experience.

Codex 4D: Journey in Four Dimensions into the Manuscript – Italy 🇮🇹
Why they won: For its groundbreaking work in making fragile historical manuscripts accessible to both scientific and general audiences, embodying the essence of ‘heritage in motion’ through innovation and preservation.
Project description: This project, developed by the Institute of Heritage Science at CNR and the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, offers a multidimensional journey into ancient manuscripts, using advanced technologies to preserve and present these delicate objects. Funded by the Lazio Region (POR FESR Lazio 2014–2020), the project brings manuscripts to life through virtual and augmented reality, blending science and culture in a unique way.

In Our Care. The Keeper’s Choice – Portugal 🇵🇹
Why they won: For offering a unique perspective by showcasing art through the eyes of museum security guards, creating an emotional connection to the artworks with beautifully crafted films that bridge classical and contemporary art.
Project description: Directed by João Estrada, this project from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon gives voice to the museum’s security guards, who present and share their personal reflections on selected artworks from the museum’s permanent collection. Through this series of short films, each episode lasting 10 to 20 minutes, we experience art from a deeply human perspective, blending art, biography, and everyday life.

Evolution of Telephones – Slovenia 🇸🇮
Why they won: For its creative and engaging portrayal of the evolution of telephones, offering a visually captivating journey from historical devices to the smartphones we rely on today.
Project description: This project, promoted by Muzej pošte in telekomunikacij and directed by Andreja Goetz, was created by students, who took viewers through the technological transformation of telephones. National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War 🇺🇦
Why they were honored: For their deeply moving and historically valuable videos, “Martyrology” and “Izyum. Liberation”, created with passion and high quality despite the adversities of war. These projects stand as a testimony to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the crucial role of museums in defending freedom and independence.
Project description: Directed by Dmytro Chornyi and produced by Smart Movie, “Izyum. Liberation” documents the museum’s expedition to the newly liberated Kharkiv and Donetsk regions in October 2022. Led by Director General Yurii Savchuk, the team collected evidence of the devastation caused by the Russian invasion, ensuring these war realities are preserved for future generations and museum exhibitions.
