Stapferhaus
The Stapferhaus in Lenzburg, Switzerland, is a cultural institution that explores contemporary social and cultural issues through interactive, research-based exhibitions and public dialogue.

The Stapferhaus in Lenzburg, Switzerland, is a cultural institution that explores key social and cultural questions through interactive exhibitions and research projects. It was founded in 1960 by Pro Helvetia, Pro Argovia, the Canton of Aargau, and the City of Lenzburg. The museum first operated from Lenzburg Castle before moving in 2018 to a purpose-built space next to the railway station. The new building brings together exhibition areas and offices under one roof and can be adapted for different themes and formats.
The museum focuses on topics that shape everyday life, including truth, identity, gender, and belief. Each exhibition combines design, media, and documentary material to encourage visitors to think critically and share their views. Instead of maintaining a permanent collection, the Stapferhaus bases its exhibitions on research into issues that are relevant to contemporary society.
Since 2007, the institution has been managed by the Stapferhaus Foundation and is funded mainly through project-based support from public and private partners. In 2020, it received the European Museum of the Year Award for its original approach to exhibition design and its ability to create spaces for dialogue on current issues.
As a 2024 DASA Award candidate, the Stapferhaus continues to build on this approach, showing how museums can help people reflect on the challenges and questions of modern life.
