The State Museum of Ethnography in Warsaw, established in 1888, is the oldest ethnographic museum in Poland and houses an extensive collection of approximately 80,000 objects representing cultures from around the world. Located in a historic 19th-century building designed by Henryk Marconi at 1 Kredytowa Street, the museum preserves and presents the diversity of human cultures through folk art, costumes, crafts, sculptures, and artifacts from Poland, Europe, Africa, Australia, Oceania, and the Americas. The museum features multiple permanent exhibitions including “Celebration Time in Polish and European Culture,” showcasing national costumes and festive attire, and “The Order of Things,” presenting traditional tools and craft methods.
With a commitment to critical museology and decolonial perspectives, the museum prioritizes accessibility and education, offering guided tours and collaborative exhibitions developed in partnership with communities whose cultures are represented. Its collections document both the material and spiritual dimensions of cultural heritage, making it a vital institution for understanding human diversity and fostering intercultural dialogue.
