Istanbul Cinema Museum, Turkey
The Istanbul Cinema Museum, opened in 2021, celebrates Turkish cinema and connects it to global film history. Housed in a historic neoclassical building, the museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions, a digital memory pool, and a collection of over 8,000 films.

The Istanbul Cinema Museum, housed in the historic Köçeyan Mansion on İstiklal Avenue, opened in February 2021 after comprehensive restoration. This unique institution celebrates Turkish cinema heritage while connecting it to global film history. Built as a winter mansion in 1870 by Armenian banker Agop Köçeyan, the neoclassical building later became the prestigious Atlas Cinema in 1948, one of Turkey’s largest theatres with nearly 2,000 seats. The museum spans three floors: the first two serve as permanent exhibition space with 130 carefully curated items, while the third hosts international temporary exhibitions.
Collections include wax figures of Yeşilçam era stars, film posters, vintage cinematography equipment like cameras and projectors, personal items of renowned Turkish directors, and early filming devices such as the Zootrope. The museum features an innovative digital memory pool application—the first in a cinema museum worldwide—providing access to over 8,000 films and 30,000 industry professionals. Regarded as one of the world’s three finest cinema museums, it combines historical significance with interactive modern technology, making it an indispensable cultural destination on Beyoğlu’s Cultural Route.
