Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, Hungary
The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, located beneath Buda Castle, offers a unique glimpse into Budapest’s history. The museum, which opened in 2008, features reconstructed wards and operating theatres, and prioritizes education and accessibility through interactive tours and school programs.

The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum lies fifteen metres beneath Buda Castle, occupying a natural limestone cave system transformed into a bomb-proof refuge during World War II. Originally created as an emergency hospital treating patients during the Siege of Budapest (1944-45) and the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, the facility was later adapted into a Top Secret nuclear bunker during the Cold War era before declassification in 2002.
Opened to the public in 2008, the museum features reconstructed wards, operating theatres, and an x-ray department brought to life with 200 wax figures created in-house. Run by an independent foundation with no state subsidy, the museum prioritises education and accessibility, offering interactive guided tours and supporting school trips for disadvantaged children. Since 2017, approximately 1,000 students annually benefit from these programmes. The museum was nominated for the EMYA Award multiple times and remains one of Budapest’s most distinctive cultural institutions.
