Embark on a Journey Through Time: Explore Bulgaria’s Rich Heritage at the Eter Museum

One of the Živa Award winners is the Etar Museum. The museum provides a glimpse into Bulgaria’s historical richness. Situated alongside the Sivek River in Gabrovo, this open-air ethnographic marvel invites you to delve into the captivating essence of a bygone era.

Established in 1964 by Lazar Donkov, the Etar Museum stands as a testament to his vision of safeguarding and commemorating the ingenuity and lifestyle of past generations. Its architectural panorama, meticulously crafted over decades, showcases a captivating array of buildings, artisan workshops, and facilities, offering poignant insights into the daily existence of Central Stara Planina’s inhabitants from the late 18th to the early 20th century.

Central to the museum’s charm lies its collection of operational water-powered installations, a rarity within Bulgaria. From age-old mills to grinding wheels, these ancestral contraptions provide a tactile journey into traditional methods and livelihoods. The Artisan Bazaar hums with activity, reminiscent of bustling Renaissance markets, where artisans ply their trades and visitors savour authentic delicacies like simid, banitsa, and homemade candies.

Recognized with the prestigious Order of Cyril and Methodius, the museum’s commitment to preserving Bulgaria’s cultural legacy remains unwavering. Guided by Prof. Dr. Svetla Dimitrova, the Etar Museum continues to uphold its mission, extending a warm invitation to visitors throughout the year and nurturing the involvement of young volunteers, ensuring that Bulgaria’s heritage perseveres for posterity.
