Angeliki Giannakidou receives the EMA Lifetime Achievement Award – press release

Alicante, Spain, 26 September 2026 — Angeliki Giannakidou has been honored with the EMA Lifetime Achievement Award by the European Museum Academy, in recognition of her exceptional lifelong contribution to the preservation, interpretation, and transmission of the cultural heritage of Thrace.

The award was presented to Giannakidou on 26 September at MARQ Archaeological Museum in Alicante, Spain, honoring more than five decades of dedication to documenting and safeguarding the history, traditions, memories, and everyday culture of the region.

Born in 1947 in Agios Nikolaos, Chalkidiki, Greece, Giannakidou completed her education at a Pedagogical Academy before moving to Alexandroupoli in 1967. Although her professional career initially developed within her family’s construction business, her enduring passion for the cultural life of Thrace gradually became the defining work of her life.

Her contribution is remarkable not only for its longevity, but also for the deeply personal and human approach that has characterized it. Without following a conventional academic career as a historian or ethnologist, Giannakidou developed her knowledge through direct engagement with the region and its people. For decades, she travelled, listened, researched, collected, and documented. Photographs, objects, historical documents, personal testimonies, oral traditions, and countless stories became part of an extensive body of work dedicated to safeguarding the cultural memory of Thrace.

In 2002, this lifelong commitment culminated in the establishment of the Ethnological Museum of Thrace in Alexandroupoli. The museum has since become an important institution dedicated to the research, preservation, and presentation of the cultural heritage of the region.

The creation of the museum represents far more than the establishment of a cultural institution. It embodies Giannakidou’s conviction that heritage is not confined to monuments and archives, but lives equally in the memories of individuals, in traditions passed from one generation to another, and in the objects, stories, and experiences that shape a community’s identity.

As founder and president of the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, Giannakidou continues to play a central role in bringing the cultural heritage of Thrace to wider audiences. Her work has created a lasting bridge between past and present, between individual memory and collective history, and between local heritage and the broader European cultural landscape.
